Cold War: Key Topic 1 By Shannon Ramessar
Differences between communism and capitalism Capitalism: Individual rights, individual freedom, free trade and democratic elections. Communism: rights of the working class, equality, government planned trade and only communist party controlling the government.
The Grand Alliance (1941) Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt. Marriage of convenience to annihilate Hitler.
Teheran Conference 1943 Big three met up to discuss the future of Germany. 2nd front to take the pressure off Russia. Spheres of influence. Poland given more land.
Yalta Conference 1945 Big three met up and agreed that Germany would be reduced in size and demilitarised once defeated. UN to replace league of nations. USSR to declare war on Japan (they'll get more land out of this c:)
Potsdam conference 1945 Truman, Attlee and Roosevelt. Decided on reparations. Persecute Nazi war criminals in front of international court?
Tension Atomic bomb. Stalin didn't know. Created a secretive atmosphere. Different opinions on democracy.
The secret telegrams The long telegram (1946): Stalin had given a speech calling for the destruction of capitalism and there would be no peace while it was opposed to capitalism. They must seek to contain it. The novikov telegram (1946): America desires to dominate the world and they are no longer willing to cooperate after Roosevelt death. They were preparing for war.
The War of Words March 1946 The iron curtain speech- the division of Europe, all historic and rich cities under high control by the USSR. Stalin responds and says that Churchill is a warmonger and is the new Hitler.
Truman Doctrine 1947 Stated that the world had a choice between communist tyranny and democratic freedom. America has the duty to defend and maintain liberty wherever it is threatened. They must seek to contain communism.
Marshall Aid '2 halves of the same walnut' also in 1947 Committed $13 billion of money to rebuild the shattered economies of Europe to make communism seem less attractive, as if people had more money then they wouldn't want to share it. The European countries had to trade freely with America.
Stalin's response He called it dollar imperialism and that they were trying to buy their alliances. No country in his Soviet sphere of influence should accept this.
Satellite states A country that is officially independent but in reality is controlled by another country. Each leader of the country had to obey Moscow, this created an atmosphere of fear and mistrust.
Cominform 1947 It represented communist parties across Europe and brought them under the direction of the Soviet Union. People were checked to make sure that they were loyal, if not they would be removed, this process was often violent.
Cominform Stalin's answer to Marshall Aid (1949) Prevented trade with the West to minimise American influence on Europe. Ensured economic recovery remained within the soviet union.
The Berlin Blockade Military blockade around West Berlin in 1948.
Berlin Airlift Planes transported good to West Berlin around the clock. At its peak, 170 000 tonnes was airlifted in January 1949.
NATO 1949 Military alliance the West. If one NATO country came under attack then all members of NATO would come to its defence.
Warsaw Pact 1955 A military alliance that mirrored NATO.
