Factors affecting enzymes

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Effect of heat on enzymesAt first it increases reaction rate because the higher temperatures causes substrates to collide more, however after the optimum the vibrations mean weaker bonds start go break that holds the tertiary structure together. Eventually the active site is irreversibly changed and is denatured
  2. 2Q10This is the coefficient for the figure given to the increase of rate of reaction for 10 degrees. It is worked out by (rate of reaction [t + 10] divided by rate of reaction at T)
  3. 3pH and enzymesTertiary structures of enzymes are held together by hydrogen bonds which can be interfered with by excess or to little hydrogen ions in different pH's. If it is to high it causes the hydrogen bonds to break and the active site to unravel
  4. 4Changing substrate concentrationAt first this may lead to an increase in rate of reaction because enzyme reaction will be getting quicker. However after it reaches a maximum where all enzymes are being used and enzymes are no longer the limiting factor
  5. 5Competitive inhibitorThese are substrates which have the same shape as a substrate and collide with the enzyme. At first this 'dilutes' the rate of reaction but they are soon broken down; the limitation all depends on the ratio of inhibitors to substratesCompetitive inhibitor
  6. 6Non competitive inhibitorsThese bond to another area of the enzyme known as the allosteric site, these however changes the active site sometime irreversibly. This means there is a drop in rate of reaction which cannot be changed by varying substrate concentrationNon competitive inhibitors
  7. 7End-product inhibitionThis occurs when after an enzyme reaction is complete, it may stay tightly bound to the enzyme; known as negative feedback so not to much of the product than needed is made
