Question Answer
Aim To show that a child cannot be socialised to take on the role of the opposite sex.
Procedure Bruce - penis burnt off Money recommended they raise him as a girl - upbringing causes masculinity/femininity. At age 1 1/2 he became Brenda.
Findings At first Brenda adapted well. Puberty = PROBLEMS Although she had hormones - masculine features + attraction to females (NOT THAT THAT MATTERED). Age 13: parents told truth. Brenda = Relieved Renamed herself David and had a penis reconstruction.
Conclusion Nature outweighed nurture
Limitations Difficult to generalise - small samples Impossible to control variables e.g. Bruce had bro as role model Raised as boy for 17 mnths Unethical.
