Question Answer
Whats an artheroma? It is the build up of fatty deposits which can impair blood flow.
What happens if blood flow is interuppted? If the bloodflow is interrupted to the heart then this can cause a heart attck
3 stages of an artheroma -Fat deposits in the coronary artery which causes the blood to clot and become dislodged which narrows and reduces blood flow to c.a which increases the pressure of blood.reduces supplied level of oxygen so the heart has to work harder as it doesnt recieve enough oxygen heart cells start to die heartattck.
What happens if oxygen is too low? If oxygen is too low, heart cells do not get enough so they start to die causing a heart attack.
Effect of chd The heart needs to contract and relax. The coronary artery supplies blood to the heart. artery can become narrower due to the build up of fatty deposits in the walls of the artery which will mean a smaller lumen decreasing the amount of oxygen to the heart.
what is a stent a wire metal mesh tube which is used to open an artery with a balloon which is inflated which causes the stent to expand, and it becomes lodged in the artery. The stent then acts to keep the artery open so that the heart continues to receive enough oxygen to function effectively.
disadvantage of using a stent Plaque can still form on the stent causing the problem again.
HOW DOES AN ATHEROMA CAUSE A MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION Fatty deposits/substances deposit in the wall of arteries Fatty streaks which are made up of wbc Can enlarge to form patches of deposits known as atheroma which can grow to be made up of cholesterol, fibres and dead tissues. An artheroma damgers lining of artery causes the lumen to become narrower. Increases chance of blood clot which can form on deposit and become lodged in the artery which will reduce blood to heart and therefore oxygen so heart cells start to die and cause a heart attack.
4 suggestions that could increase getting a heart attack -Less time to excerise - More stress - smoking - more saturated fats in diet
1. Coronary artery 2. Stent method/using stent 3. Stent opens and keeps artery open. - it is attached to a balloon which inflates and widens the vessel. Stent expands & becomes dislodged in artery and keeps it open. Allows more blood to flow through.
Ad: Extends life span, useful when no other treatment available. Dis: - Risk of infection, Device has limited life span, battery needs changing, low success rate, discomfort for person bc of battery/heart.
