Input, Output and Storage Glossary
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1InputData provided to a computer system, such as via a keyboard, mouse, microphone, camera or physical sensors. A stimulus to which a real-time application will respond.
- 2OutputThe data that results from a computation. A signal from the computer into a human-readable form or into a form suitable for re-processing by the computer at a later stage. A response generated by a real-time application to stimulus.
- 3Input deviceA peripheral unit that can accept data, presented in the appropriate machine-readable form, decode the data and transmit them as electrical pulses to the central processing unit.
- 4Output deviceA peripheral unit that translates signals from the computer into a human-readable form or into a form suitable for re-processing by the computer at a later stage.
- 5Storage deviceA peripheral unit that allows the user to store data in an electronic form for a longer period of time and when the computer is switched off. The data can only be read by the computer and not in human-readable form.
- 6CD Compact diskA type of optical device with a capacity of 700MB which come in three formats, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW. They are normally 12.5 cm in diameter.
- 7DVD Digital Versatile DiskA type of optical device with a capacity of 4.7GB. Essentially a larger capacity CD with a faster data transfer rate.
- 8Flash memoryA solid state memory that is used in portable devices or in removable devices to store data. It is secondary storage with slower access times than RAM, but faster access times than a magnetic hard disk.
