ionisation energy

reegan.oravecz Chemistry A-Level English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1define the first ionisation energy (I1)the energy required to remove one electron per atom from a mole of gaseous atoms.
    For example
    M(g)--> M^+(g)+e^-(g)
  2. 2what is ionisation energy measured inKJmol-1
  3. 3what is the abbreviation of ionisation energyIE
  4. 4what is the second ionisation energy (I2)energy needed to remove a second electron per ion from a mole of gaseous +1 ions.
    Example
    M^+--->M^2+(g)+e-
  5. 5What is the trend in ionisation energies when removing more than one electronwhen removing the second, third electrons it requires more energy than the one before because the electrons are closer to the nucleus
  6. 6What is the trend in ionisation energies across the periodic table and whygenerally increases because there is a greater nuclear charge and therefore makes it more difficult to remove the electron because there if a stronger attraction . There is a smaller radius. and the same shielding
  7. 7why does aluminium have a lower ionisation energy than magnesium even though it has a higher chargebecause the outer electron in aluminium is in the 3p orbital has a slightly higher energy than the 3s orbital therefore requires less energy to remove it and its slightly further away from the nucleus.
  8. 8why does sulphur have a lower ionisation energy than phosphorus?because in sulfur one of the orbitals have contains 2 electrons in the 3p orbitals therefore the repulsion between them makes it easier to remove one despite the general increase in nuclear charge.
  9. 9What is the trend in ionisation energies going down the periodic tableThere is a general decrease in the first ionisation energies the outer electron in the main energy level is further from the nucleus therefore there is greater shielding making it more difficult despite the increase in nuclear charge. shielding outweighs the nuclear charge and so there is a larger radius so electron is further away
