- 1What are elements?The most basic materials for building the world and are substances that that are made up of only one type of atom
- 2What are atoms?Building blocks that make up everything in the Universe
- 3How many different types of atoms are there?Around 100 different types
- 4What shape are atoms?They are round like tiny balls
- 5What are the only things that allow us to see atoms?Scanning tunnelling microscopes (SEM) because optical microscopes are unable to see them
- 6What are the characteristics of elements called?Properties
- 7Into how much groups can elements be classified?2 Groups
- 8What are these groups?Metallic and non-metallic elements
- 9What are the properties of metallic elements?They tend to be shiny, are solid at room temperature (besides mercury), are good conductors of heat and electricity, are malleable and are ductile
- 10What are the properties of non-metal elements?Tend to be dull, do not conduct heat or electricity and are brittle
- 11How many known elements are there?There are 18 known elements
- 12How much of them occur naturally and how much are synthetic?91 naturally occur and the rest are synthetic
- 13What is the periodic table?A table that scientists use to display all the known elements and their symbols, it lists them from lightest to heaviest
- 14Where does the symbol of an element come from?It often comes directly from it's name
- 15What does an elements symbol look like?They are usually 1, 2 or 3 letters, the first one is always capital and the others are lower case
- 16H =Hydrogen
- 17He =Hellium
- 18K =Potassium
- 19Sn =Tin
- 20Kr =Krypton
- 21What are the 3 ways atoms can be arranged in molecules?As single atoms (referred to as being monatomic), in clusters called molecules and in large grid-like structures called lattices
