Chapter 4 Review Questions
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1Table 3.5 lists typical elements found in a process control block for an unthreaded OS. Of theses, which would belong to a thread control block and which should belong to a process control block for a multithreaded system?TODO
- 2List reasons why a mode switch between threads may be cheaper than a mode switch between processes.Because the virtual memory space is the same between threads and therefor less memory to move. Also smaller control block.
- 3What are the two separate and potentially independent characteristics embodied in the concept of process?Resource ownership: The OS takes care of preventing interference from other processes when it comes to resources.
Scheduling/execution: a process has an execution state and a dispatching priority and is the entity that is scheduled and dispatched by the OS. - 4Give four general examples of the use of threads in a single-user multiprocessing system.TODO
- 5How is a thread different from a process?Process has one or many threads, where as threads are the smallest unit of execution schedulable by the OS scheduler. Threads share memory and file descriptor with other threads within same process.
- 6What are the advantages of using multithreading instead of multiple processes? They are cheaper and more light-weight.
- 7List some advantages and disadvantages of using kernel-level threads.Advantages are that kernel-level threads can be scheduled to run in parallel on separate processors. The disadvantages is that context switch is more expensive on kernel-level threads.
