DNA profiling

Description

DNA profiling is also known as DNA fingerprinting. It is a method of making a unique pattern of bands from the DNA of a person. This flashcard deck focuses on DNA profiling and the method of preparing a DNA profile. It would appeal to anyone studying intermediate level biology.

DNA profiling DNA fingerprinting
DNA profiliing Making a unique pattern of bands from the DNA of a person
Step 1 DNA profiling DNA is released
Step 2 - DNA profiling DNA is cut into fragments
Step 3 - DNA profiling The fragments are separated
Step 4 - DNA profiling Patterns are compared
Method of amplifying DNA Polymerase Chain Reaction, PCR
Enzymes used for cutting enzymes Restriction Enzymes
Organism in which restriction enzymes were isolated Bacteria
Different restriction enzymes Cut at different sites
Example of restriction enzyme GAATTC restriction enzyme
Sections of DNA cut out Restriction Fragments
Separation of Restriction Fragments On a basis of size
Method of separating restriction fragments Gel Electrophoresis
Components of gel electrophoresis Sugar-based gel electric current small glass tank
Electric current in gel electrophoresis Draws negatively charged DNA to one end of the gel
Use of radioactive material in gel electrophoresis Produce an image of the DNA fragments
