diagnostic techniques

katieb273 Health and Social Care A-Level English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1ultra sound scantransducer produces high frequency sound waves which penetrates soft tissues and reflects dense tissues
placed on the part of the body needed
an oily jel is used to ensure good contact between the skin and the transducer
receiver is used alongside the transducer to detect bodily sounds
information is processed on a computer
  2. 2CT scanmakes use of x ray to produce image of slice/cross section
    scanner = giant thick ring
within wall is x ray source - opposite detectors
patient lies on table and slides into ring
x ray machine rotates around body emitting thin beam of x rays
information is processed by computer software
  3. 3x raytype of electromagnetic radiation
    very short wave length
    penetrates soft tissues
produces an invisible beam of x rays into the body
photographic paper in an envelope is placed behind the body to prevent the absorbing of light
denser tissues absorb more light appear white
softer tissues absorb less so appear grey
shows up like a negative photo
  4. 4MRI scanstrong magnetic field align particles called protons which are within hydrogen atoms, all P line up in parallel to magnetic field
short bursts of radio waves sent from scanner into body - knock protons from place
when radio waves stop- p realign in place emitting radio signals
protons in diff tissues re align at different speeds depending on if it is hard or soft t
signals are detected by receiving device in scanner
receiving device transmits signals to computer which creates image
  5. 5PET scanradiotracer injected into the body and goes to place with most activity ie tumours
radio tracer decays - protons released which react with electrons
results in gamma rays detected by scanner
    creates 3d image
shows how body works as can see how it reacts with radio tracer
by tracking movement of tracer scanner builds detailed image
reciever detects radiation - R+Y colours show body parts functioning properly
  6. 6radio nuclide scanradio nucile = chemical which emmits gamma rays
diff radionuclide collect different/concentrate on diff organs
radionuclide depends on part of body being scanner
cells most active - take up more radionuclide and emmit more gamma rays
gamma rays = picked up by camera and are turned into electrical sig
sent to computer - builds image
