Flashcards

Polymer Processses

TS P DT Advanced Level (A- Level) English 6 cards

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 1Moulding processes for thermoplastic?Blow moulding
    Injection moulding
    Rotational moulding
    Calendaring
    Extrusion
  2. 2Moulding processes for thermosetting plastic?Compression moulding
  3. 3Briefly, how does compression moulding (specifically for thermosetting plastic) work?A 'slug' (powdered mixture of the thermosetting plastic) is made into its rough shape and placed between two mould halves
Moulds will be heated which will form cross-links on the slug
The moulds are then closed which will squeeze out excess material, with the moulds closed at a certain pressure level while being heated long enough for the thermosetting plastic to be cured
Slug can then be ejected while either warm or cool
  4. 4Forming processes for thermosetting plastic?Thermoforming
    Vacuum forming
    Line bending
  5. 5Difference between thermoforming and vacuum forming?Thermoforming uses two mould halves, vacuum forming only uses one.
Thermoforming allows for extra details and smooth surfaces on the finished form, but the material does become thinner and designs have to be relatively simple.
  6. 6Moulding processes with expensive moulds?Injection moulding
    Blow moulding
