Communication

Tom Beaumont Computing AS - Level English 22 cards

Cards in this deck (22)

  1. 1What is Serial TransmissionSerial Data transmission sends and receives single bits at a time in sequence.
  2. 2Where is serial transmission seen in a computer?Serial connections are used in most of the peripherals to the computer such as the mouse and keyboard.
  3. 3Where are serial cables used?Serial cables connect computers together to form a network.
  4. 4What factors affect the speed of serial connections? The speed of serial transmission is dependent on the type of cable used
  5. 5What is parallel data transmission?Parallel data transmission uses a number of wires to send a number of bits simultaneously. The more wires there are, the more data that can be transmitted.
  6. 6Where may a parallel connection be seen?Parallel connections are used when large amounts of data needs to be transmitted over a short distance.
For example between the processor and the memory.
  7. 7What is bandwidth?Bandwidth is the term used to describe the amount of data that can be transmitted along a communication channel.
  8. 8But what is it?It relates to the range of frequencies that are available to the carrier wave that carries data. The range is the difference between the upper and lower frequencies.
  9. 9What affect does an increased range of frequencies have on data transmission? An increased range of frequencies means that more data can be transmitted in the same time frame.
  10. 10What is bandwidth measured in?Hertz (Hz) and Megahertz (MHz).
  11. 11What is bitrate?Bit rate is used to describe the speed at which a transmission is taking place.
  12. 12What is the relationship between bitrate and bandwidth?Bit rate is limited by how much bandwidth is available. Bit rate and bandwidth are directly proportional.
  13. 13What is bit rate measured in?Bit rate is measured in bits per second (bps)
  14. 14What is baud rate?Baud rate is used to describe the speed at which data can be transmitted.
  15. 15What is a Baud? One baud represents one electronic state change per second. An electronic state change can be a change in frequency of the carrier wave, a change in voltage, a change of amplitude or a shift of a waveform.
  16. 16What does a baud equate to?A baud traditionally equates to one bit per second. However it is possible to send more than one bit per state change by using alternate voltage levels to represent the bits. In this case rather than sending bits you send symbols which may have any number of bits in them.
  17. 17What is latency?Latency is a term to describe the time delay that occurs when any component within a computer is responding to an instruction.
  18. 18Why does latency exist?Sending instructions through cables, busses and logic gates all takes time, therefore latency can occur at any point during the transmission.
  19. 19What are the three causes of latency?Propagation latency
    Transmission Latency
    Processing Latency
  20. 20Propagation LatencyThe amount of time it takes a logic gate in a circuit to transmit the data.
  21. 21Transmission LatencyThe amount of time it takes to pass through a particular communication medium. For example fibre optic cable has a lower latency than copper cable.
  22. 22Processing LatencyThe amount of time it takes for data to pass around a network depending on how many servers or devices it has to pass through.
