Flashcards
The Atom - 1.2: Ions
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1What is the charge of an atom and why?Atoms are neutral-charged because they have an equal amount of positive protons and negative electrons.
- 2What is an isotope?Isotopes are atoms with different amounts of neutrons.
- 3What is an ion?An ion is an atom with added or lost electrons.
- 4What is a cation?A cation is an atom with lost electrons.
- 5How are cations formed? If an atom's outermost shell is mostly empty, the atom would usually lose all of its electrons in the outer shell.
- 6What is an anion? An anion is an electron with added electron.
- 7How are anions formed? If an atom's outermost shell is almost full, the atom would usually gain additional atoms until the shell is full.
- 8What is an ionic compound? An ionic compound is a large crystal lattice made up of anions and cations.
- 9How are ionic bonds strong? They are hard, brittle, and have high melting points.
- 10Why are ionic bonds strong?Ionic bonds are hard because it takes a lot of force to break the bonds, brittle because they are fixed in position, and have high melting points because only high temperatures are able to break ionic bonds.
- 11What is solubility?Solubility is how easily an ionic compound dissolves in water.
- 12What happens to a ionic compound when in water? The water particles surround the cations and anions, this breaks the crystal lattice apart.
- 13What happens if water is removed from a dissolved ionic compound. The ions can stick together once more, reforming the crystal lattice. This is called recrystallisation.
- 14What happens to ions in a solution. They are able to move freely in a solution. This means they can create a flow of electrical charge and conduct electricity.
- 15Is naming ionic compounds hard?Yes.
