What happened to the North Korean army? It collapsed as was cleared from the south
When did UN forces cross the 38th parallel and enter North Korea? Why? October 1950 To unite the country under a non-communist government
How did the Chinese react to this? they launched 300,000 troops into a counter-attack
What affect did this have on the UN forces? They were pushed back to the south. Seoul changed hands for the third time
How did MacArthur react to this? He called for the use of Atomic weapons against the Chinese
How did Truman respond to MacArthur's demands? He did not want to risk nuclear war MacArthur was replaced
What did the UN troops then do? they pushed the Chinese back to the 38th Parallel
How long did the stalemate that then ensues last for? 2 years
After Stalin's death, where did peace talks take place? Panmunjom
What did these result in? an armistice
What did this mean for the Cold War? It was now a world-wide struggle
Why did further conflicts seem likely in the region? Old colonial powers (including Britain and France) were clearly too weak to re-establish their authority in Asia
What alliances were established by the USA following the Korean war? South East Asia Treaty Organisation (1954) Central Treaty Organisation (1955)
Why were these alliances made? To create a wing of allied states around the communist block to "contain" their influence.
