Flashcards

3. Data transmission

Clark McDonald Computer Science AS - Level English 4 cards

Cards in this deck (4)

  1. 1Data transmissionSerial - Bits are sent sequentially on the same channel (wire) which reduces costs for wire and easier to implement but also slows the speed of transmission.
Parallel - Refers to the process of sending two or more packets of information that are relayed over two or more lines at the same time. Faster due to a higher rate of transfer. However, parallel ports also require more hardware, making them more expensive to implement.
Switching - Connecting computers over a network so you can send data through packet switching, breaking up a packet into several pieces for fast and efficient transfer.
  2. 2Data transmission (Continued)Simplex - One way communication, where data is sent in only one direction.
Half Duplex - Two way communication, where data can be sent only in one direction at each time.
Full Duplex - Two way communication where data can be sent simultaneously in either direction.
Multiplexing - Combining multiple signals into one transmitted signal over a shared medium. Multiplexers and de-multiplexers are used to convert the signals.
  3. 3Communication networksA packet is a segment of data sent from one computer to another. Contains the source, destination, size, type, data, and other useful information to help the packet reach its destination and be read.
Network collision - Occurs when two or more computer attempt to transmit data in a packet at the same time.
Network collision detection - The process by which a node determines that a collision has occurred.
  4. 4Communication networks (Continued)After a collision occurs, each device then waits a random amount of time and retries until successful in getting the transmission sent.
Packet Switching - When data is split into packets and each packet takes a different route, they may arrive out of order so then need to be re-assembled.
Circuit Switching - When a number of switches are used to create a dedicated path between the sender and receiver.
