Flashcards
Weathering
Cards in this deck (6)
- 1Weathering What is it- Examples--the process where rocks are attacked and broken down by the atmosphere in situ.
-for example air, water, changing temperature, plants and animals. - 2Physical weathering examples-ex. freeze-thaw or frost shattering & Exfoliation or onion-skin weathering
- 3Freeze-thaw or frost shattering what type of weathering is it- the process-- type of Physical weathering
- occurs when water gets into a crack in a rock and freezes.
- the water expands when it turns to ice and causes the crack to open up.
- repeated freezes and thawing weakens the rock and eventually splits it into pieces. - 4Exfoliation or onion-skin weathering what type of weathering is it- what kind of climate does it occur in- the process-- type of Physical weathering
- occurs in a very warm climate, where rocks are repeatedly heated and cooled.
- as heated, the outer layers expands
- as cooled, the outer layers then contract.
- this puts strain on the rock, so the layers peel off like the skin of an onion. - 5Chemical weathering caused by- the process-- caused by acidic rainwater
- the acid attacks the rock and causes it to rot and crumble away.
- process speeds up by water and heat - 6Biological weathering what is involved- how it breaks down the rock-- plants and animals, also break down rocks.
- they put pressure on the rocks
- Burrowing animals can also help break down rocks.
