what is the brain's outer layer called? cerebral cortex
how is our cerebral cortex different from animals? ours is more highly developed and complex and so we have higher mental functions
what are the two halves of the brain called? hemispheres
what 3 things does the spinal cord do? reflex actions passing messages to and from the brain connects the nerves to the pns
what two systems is the peripheral nervous system split into? autonomic nervous system somatic nervous system
what does the peripheral nervous system do? transmits messages to and from the central nervous system
what does the autonomic nervous system do? vital functions- breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal, stress response
what does the somatic nervous system do? muscle movement, recieves info from sensory receptors
what does the endocrine system work with to control vital functions? nervous system
which system is faster? nervous
four examples of hormones? thyroxine, adrenaline, oestrogen, testosterone
three examples of glands? thyroid, pituitary, testes
what do glands do? produce hormones
where are hormones secreted and where do they have an effect? into the bloodstream whatever cell has the receptor for the particular hormone
what does hormone thyroxine do? affects cells in the heart and increases heart rate, and metabolic rates (chem processes in cells) and so growth rate
what is the pituitary gland known as? master gland
why is the pituitary gland known as the master gland? controls release of hormones from other endocrine glands in the body
what particular system works with the endocrine system to produce a response? autonomic
what response is produced when the endocrine system and autonomic work together? fight or flight
