Flashcards
Comp Revision Y11
Cards in this deck (22)
- 1What is an algorithm?A set of rules specifying how to solve a problem
- 2In computing, what is a decision?A selection from a range of options depending upon the result of a condition
- 3What is a flowchart?A diagram of the sequence of operations in a computer program
- 4What is process?Where you perform logical operations on (data) according to programmed instructions in order to achieve a desired result
- 5What is pseudocode?A description of a computer programming algorithm that uses the structural conventions of a programming language, but is intended for human reading rather than machine reading
- 6What is a subroutine?A subset of code within a larger program, which performs a specific task
- 7What is iteration?A group of instructions is executed repeatedly until a condition is met (a loop)
- 8What is nesting? When control structures are inserted within other control structures
- 9What is a rogue value?A value that will not occur as normal input and which is used to interrupt a process
- 10What is a boot program? The program that is used to start the computer. It is automatically loaded so that its instructions can be fetched when the computer is turned on, and it eventually loads the operating system.
- 11What does CPU stand for and what is it?Stands for Central Processing Unit
It is the main component of the computer. It carries out all the processing by fetching and executing instructions. - 12What is clock speed? The speed at which the processor carries out instructions, measured in Megahertz (MHz) or Gigahertz (GHz)
- 13What is a core?Where each single processor circuit is capable of fetching and executing instructions
- 14What is CPU cache?Where memory buffer on the processor that stores instructions which have been fetched before and allows them to be fetched more quickly the next time
- 15What is the Fetch -Execute cycle? The process by which programs are run on a computer. The processor repeatedly fetches the instructions of the program from memory and executes them.
- 16What is a multi-core processor?A processor with more than one core (processor circuit) which means it can fetch and execute more than one instruction at a time
- 17What is a sequence?A list of instructions to be carried out in order, one after the other
- 18What is selection? The pathway through a program is selected by using a condition to decide on what instructions to execute next
- 19In computing, what is repetition?A group of instructions is executed repeatedly until a condition is met a (LOOP)
- 20What does RAM stand for?Random access memory
- 21What does ROM stand for?Read only memory
- 22What's the difference between RAM and ROM?RAMM
