What are Browsers? A browser is what you use to access the internet. You can’t access the internet if you don’t have a browser. Examples of a browser is; Safari, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera.
What is the 8 point plan? The 8 point plan is 8 questions that you ask yourself before using the website.
What are Boolean connctors? Boolean connectors are words like AND, OR and NOT. Always put them in capitals. You can use them to narrow down your searches, for example if you type in dogs AND puppies it will come up with them together.
What is a URL A URL is the web address that goes in at the top of the browser. It stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
What does WWW stand for WWW stands for ‘World Wide Web’. All websites used to include this, but nowadays some companies choose not to.
What is a Domain Name? A domain name tells you what the name of the website/company is called. Domain names have to be bought. Once a company has bought a domain name, no one else can use it because each URL has to be different otherwise the computer won’t be able to recognise it.
What is a domain type? The letters immediately after the company name show the domain type. For example: .org is an organisation. Charities and other not-for-profit companies use this. .co is a company (not American). .me is a domain type designed to be used for personal websites.
What is http://? http:// appears at the beginning of all URLS. its stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It's a set of rules which makes a computer to read a web page. Sometimes it contains an ‘s’ – https:// The ‘s’ stands for secure. You should always look for this when paying for goods online.
How can you tell what county the website is from? You can usually tell where a websites from the two letters after the domain type. .fr=France .it=Italy .ie=Ireland .es=Spain (España) .de=Germany (Deutschland)
Where does the path/file come in a URL The path/file to the resource comes at the end. It takes you to a specific page in the website. It can consist of words, letters and numbers
What are search engines? The definition of a search engine is: Search Engine; A program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the world wide web. search engines include; Bing, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and Google
