| Question | Answer |
| What are the 3 assumptions of the cognitive approach? | Computer analogy. Internal processung influences behaviour Schemas |
| What is computer analogy? | The brain is like a computer, which can multitask. recieves information through senses from out environment. processes infomation. and the thoughts and actions occur. |
| What does it mean by internal processing influences behaviour? | To understand the influence of processing you must consider the range of couples functions the mind undertakes. Problem solving, memmove, perception, rational decision making. These processes influences the others with causes different processing speeds |
| What proves mental internal processing? | The stroop test |
| What are schemas? | They are packets on information, that are clustered together, into schemata. Which helps us understand the world us. When new information is learnt it is added to a schema and if the information cannot be categorised, the schemas are reorganised to create equilibrium |
| What is the evidence for schemas? | Bartletts war of the ghosts study, people misremembered information based on schemas. canoe became a boat, other aspects of the story were normalised and rationalised to create equilibrium. |
| How can the cognitive approach be used to explain depression? | 1) Faulty processing in the computer, depressed people have irrational thinking 2) Beck said, people have negative schemas about themselves, the world and the future. These schemas influence our social interactions which leads to a cycle of depression. |
| What is CBT? | cognitive Behaviour Therapy. |
| What is the aim of CBT? | It's aim is to challenge faulty automatic processing that leads to abnormal behaviours such as depression |
| What do depressed people have? | a cognitive triad. Unrealistic thoughts about: The self The world The future. |
| What are the aspects of CBT? | Dysfunctional thoughts diary. cognitive re constructing. Behavioural activation. |
| What is the dysfunctional thought diary? | "Homework" where clients keep a record of any events leading up to any unpleasant emotions + negative thinking. They then rate how much they believe their thoughts. They then write a rational response, automatic feeling. And rate how much they believe it again. Finally they re-rate their thoughts and feelings |
| What is cognitive restructuring? | Client works with therapist to identify and challenge negative thinking patterns. "therapy during therapy" |
| What is behavioural activation? | Plan a pleasant activity for everyday, something you wouldn't usually do. To induce positive emotions and focusing on new things will detract from negative thinking patterns. Keep a record, noting how they felt, the client is also encouraged to explore why and what they can do to change it if it goes wrong. |
| How does Behavioural activation helpful the clients depression? | It reorganises schemas because they are reminded of things they enjoy and stuff. Which helps the client move away from negative thinking. |
| Evaluating CBT. What did Janet et al (1999) & (1992) study say? | In a study of 108 patients with sever depression, it was as effective as some anti depressants.. But in 1992 it wasn't as effective, so overall it isn't superior over all anti depressants. |
| What does it rely on to be effective? | Relies on therapists competence. 15% of CBT outcomes depend on the therapist. |
| What did David and Avelino say about CBT? | Its more suitable for motivates clients, which if you have depression is rare because usually they're extremely unmotivated. |
| Is it a successful therapy? What is the success rate with drug therapy? | Most effective treatment for depression and anxiety 90%. Widely used in the NHS. |
| What is another positive about CBT? | Allows clients to create their own coping strategies. Recognises free will. |
| What are the good ethical things with CBT? | Maintains confidentiality No negative consequences if it doesn't work. Risks to patients in terms of stress or pain is low, valid consent is given |
| What is the ethical concern with CBT? | Patient blame. At the beginning of treatment high levels of psychological harm whilst explaining dysfunctional thoughts |
