Flashcards
Heat and Temperature- final study

Cards in this deck (33)
- 1Freezing pointWhen water changes from a liquid to a solid state- which is 0 degrees celsius
- 2Melting PointWhen water changes from a solid to a liquid state- which is also 0 degrees Celsius
- 3Boiling pointThe continuous transfer of heat energy to liquid water causes the water to boil and change to a gas state-
boiling point for water is 100 degrees Celsius - 4Condensation pointTransferring heat energy from water in a gas state causes it to change to a liquid state. This cooling process is called condensation- it also occurs at 100 degrees Celsius
- 5Heat energyIs a form of energy that transfers from matter at higher temperatures to lower temperatures
- 6What happens to the speed of particle movement and the amount of space between the particles when heat is added to a substanceSlowly it turns from solid to gas and the speed and kinetic energy get faster as heat is added and the particles start to move farther apart from each other.
- 7Thermal EnergyIs the total energy (kinetic) of all particles in a given substance.
- 84 main ideas in the Particle Model of Matter1. All matter is made of tiny particles
2. The particles of matter are always moving- this involves kinetic energy
3. The particles have spaces between them- different states of matter have different amounts of space
4. Adding heat to matter makes the particles move faster- it increases the amount of kinetic energy - 9Conductors- 3 examples of eachAre common with solids and less common in liquids and RARE in Gasses.
They are materials that allow easy transfer of heat.
eg) metals are good conductors of energy
Iron, silver, copper - 10Heat TransferThe world always tries to be equal- so heat flows from a hot body to a cold one
eg) Hot air rises, water- hot goes to cold
Cold doesn't transfer to hot. - 11Heat transfer= expansion? When heat transfers from 1 object to another, the volume of each object moves up/ gets affected and it gets larger.
Change of volume- caused by heat transfer is an example of the particle model of matter. - 12Convection CurrentHeat transfer by convection occurs when the particles in a liquid or gas move in circular patterns, called CONVECTION CURRENTS.
They form when heat transfer to liquids or gases.
- 13If you have a pot of water that is 95 degrees and a cup of water at the same temperature- which contains more thermal energy? The pot of water has more thermal energy because there is more water, which means more thermal energy, more particles, more kinetic energy
- 14Do solids expand or contract when they are heated? How about liquids, gases? Why does this happen to each state of matter?Solids expand when the thermal energy increases. Same as liquids and gases. This is because of thermal expansion, something expands because of heat. Also as particles get heated their kinetic energy increases, which the particles move around faster, another reason why the volume increase.
- 15Convection- what happens?Heat is transferred when liquid or gas particles move from one area to another. The particles heat up and move around
eg) Hot water/ cold water experiment
- 16Insulators- 3 examples of eachAre materials that do not allow easy transfer of heat.
They can reduce the amount of heat that can transfer from a hotter object to a colder one.
eg) Plastic, cork, and wood- which means that they are poor conductors of heat. - 17Radiation- what happens? Is the transfer of energy by invisible waves that can travel great distances.
Eg) When you hold your hand over a fire and it feels hot without you touching it. That heat is radiation.
- 18How does heat move in Conduction? The heat source and heat move from one end to another in ONE DIRECTION.
From areas of greater kinetic energy to less kinetic energy.
- 19What colour would you wear if you wanted to stay cool on a hot day- use the words absorb and reflectYou would wear shiny and light colored clothing because it reflects sunlight, while dark and dull colored clothing absorbs the radiant energy.
- 20Conduction- what happens? Is the transfer of heat energy between substances that are in contact with each other
THE PARTICLES DO NOT MOVE- ONLY THE HEAT DOES!
- 21The difference between a renewable and non-renewable energy resource?Renewable Resource- are those natural resources that can be replaced- example- wind energy or the sun's energy
Non-Renewable Resource- Cannot be replaced, is limited- example- gold, fossil fuels- oil, natural gases, coal. - 22What is the difference between thermal energy than temperature?Temperature is the average kinetic speed of movements.
Thermal Energy is the total energy
eg) A pot of soup vs A bowl of soup- they are the same temperature, but if you have more it's higher (thermal)- pot - 233 ways you can reduce the amount of energy that you use1. Be more energy efficient in your home- energy efficient lighting or low flow shower heads
2. Reduce use of cars and trucks- try walking, riding your bike, carpooling
These are many ways to reduce the amount of energy that you use. - 24ExpansionWhen the thermal energy of solid increases- so does its volume
Heat-Solid eg) Balloon with heat = expand - 25ContractionThe opposite of expansion. It's when the THERMAL ENERGY of solid decreases or the volume.
eg) heat transfer from the warmer solid to cooler matter. - 26Thermal ExpansionThe process of expansion of a substance caused by an increase in the THERMAL ENERGY
Or something expands because of heat, liquids usually expand more than solids do, but not as much as gases do. - 27Expansion jointsWere invented to deal with thermal expansion and are used on bridges, highways and between railroads tracks
- 28How do thermometers work?By expansion and contractions.
- 29The Big 3Convection, Conduction and Radiation
- 30What does conduction and convection rely on that radiation does not?The movement of particles, to transfer heat energy.
(Think of the sun- it reaches us with very few particles) - 31Radiant EnergyIs energy that is transferred from its source by radiation.
- 32Infrared WavesHeat is only 1 type of radiant energy- It is transferred by Invisible waves called Infrared Waves
- 33Light- reflections Shiny and Light Dark and Dullshiny and light- reflects light, so on a hot sunny day- you would feel cool
