Probability Terms

Cards in this deck (8)
- 1P(AuB)- Union of sets A and B

- 2P(AnB)- Intersection of sets A and B

- 3P(A|B)Conditional Probability
-> The probability of event A given that B has occurred
P(A|B) = P(AnB) / P(B) - 4Complementary EventsP(A) + P(A') = 1
E.g. P(A) = probability late for school
P(A') = probability NOT late for school - 5Mutually Exclusive Events-Events that cannot occur simultaneously
E.g.P(A) = drawing a club
P(B) = a red card
P(AnB) = 0 OR
P(AuB) = P(A) + P(B)
- 6Non-mutually Exclusive Events- Events that occur simultaneously
E.g. P(A) = drawing a heart
P(B) = drawing a queen
P(AuB) = P(A) + P(B) - P(AnB)
- 7Independent Events- Pairs of events where the outcome of one event does not affect the other
E.g. Tossing a coin and throwing a die
P(AnB) = P(A) x P(B) - 8Dependent Events- Pair of events where outcome of one event affects the other
E.g. Drawing two clubs from a deck without replacement
