Question Answer
Age of Onset Usually <15, but can be much earlier
Cause Autoimmune Destruction of Beta cells (NO insulin is produced)
Key Symptoms Tiredness, weight loss, Polyurea (Gluco & ketonuria)
Cause of most symptoms Lack of insulin & no glucagon supression, so body is in starvation state despite excess blood glucose
Untreated Diabetes- Liver (Acetyl CoA) Used in TCA to make energy for gluconeogenesis- excess is converted to ketone bodies and excreted into blood
Untreated Diabetes- Liver (Ketones) Can lead to ketoacidosis of the blood
Untreated Diabetes- Muscle (GLUT4 Receptors) Respond to lack of insulin by leaving cell membrane, so less glucose can enter
Untreated Diabetes- Muscle (Ketone Bodies/FAs) Used to make Acetyl CoA for the TCA cycle and gluconeogenic energy
Untreated Diabetes- Muscle (Pyruvate) Conversion to Acetyl CoA stops, instead converted back to glucose for use
Untreated Diabetes- Muscle (Effect of Ketone Bodies) Prevents protein breakdown in muscle- needed for food search and so is counter productive
Untreated Diabetes- Adipose Tissue Same as late phase starvation- TAGS broken down, FAs to muscle, glycerol to liver for breakdown
Untreated Diabetes- Plasma Contains excess glucose and ketone bodies
Untreated Diabetes- Plasma (LPLs) Insulin dependent, so non-functional = excess VLDLs and Chylomycrons in the blood
Untreated Diabetes- Urine Excess glucose & ketone bodies are excreted in urine
