Flashcards
Types of Memory
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1Types of Secondary StorageMagnetic, Optical and Solid State
- 2What is Magnetic Storage?Magnetic storage is types of storage that store data using magnetic fields. This includes floppy disks.
- 3How does this process work?A series of disks are magnetised. A read-write head moves close to the platter head, and then the head can modify data. The changes are recorded as binary 0s and 1s
- 4Pros and Cons of Magnetic StoragePros:
-Cheapest memory storage
-A large storage capacity
Cons:
-Extremely fragile
-Access times can be very slow - 5What is Optical Storage?Optical storage is a type of storage that saves data using markers, that can be read and modified and using lasers. This includes DVDs, CDs.
- 6How does this process work?Data is written to the disk using pits and lands. The depression in the disks are the pits, where data has been written, whereas the flat parts and are lands. Land reflects 1 where Pitts reflect 0s.
- 7Pros and Cons of Optical StoragePros:
-Cheap to make
-Portable
-Lightweight
-Resilient
Cons:
-Slow access times
-Not the biggest storage capacity. - 8What is a Solid State Drive?A Solid State Drive is a type of storage that stores data directly to the chips electronically. This includes such devices such as SD Cards, USB.
- 9How does this process work?It works by using flash memory (similar to RAM). However, this is non-volatile. It is read and written to the microchips.
- 10Pros and Cons of SSDPros:
-Much more durable
-Access times are faster
Cons:
-It is more expensive per MB
-Each location can be written to with a limitation.
- Limited lifespan.
