Flashcards
PAGING AND SEGMENTATION
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1What is paging?Paging is a method of allocating data in gaps where there is space by dividing the program, with the consideration of the sizing. Therefore the division between the two is both the same size.
- 2What is segmentation?Segmentation is also a method of allocating data, however, this one does not take the sizing into consideration.
- 3PAGING vs SEGMENTATION (Similarities)- Both programs run despite insufficient memory.
- Both pages and segments are stored on the disk
- Both are transferred into the memory when needed. - 4PAGING vs SEGMENTATION (Differences)PAGING
- They are fixed sizes
- Made to fit sections of the memory
- Physical decision
SEGMENTATION
- They are complete sections of the program
- They are all different sizes.
- Logical decision - 5PAGING vs SEGMENTATION (Limitations)If both run low on the memory segments, virtual memory is utilised and by this, data is allocated into the main hard drive (that has been temporarily converted into RAM). The more time transferring the data (disk thrashing), the slower the computer.
