What are the Metopes? The metopes are low-relief carvings of men fighting Amazons, barbarians and giants meaning normal rational beings fighting either superhumans, subhumans or non-humans and winning due to their own efforts and intelligence
What are the three types of pillars used on Greek temples? Doric, Ionic and Corinthian
What is the Naos? This is the central structure of the temple
What is the Pronaos? This is the area in front of the cella and is where the people would enter
What is the cella? The cella is the central area of the naos (and contains the statue of Athena in the Parthenon)
State the name of each part of the temple in order of height from lowest to highest and include where on the temple this is Crepidoma - steps, Base - bottom of pillar (not always included), Column - hold up the roof, Capital - the top of the column, Architrave - are seperating the Capital and the Frieze, Frieze - design on the roof of the temple, Sima - the triangular roof of the temple
What are the Elgin Marbles? The Elgin Marbles are certain sculptures from the Parthenon that the Turks allowed Sir Elgin to take from the Parthenon and are now housed the British Museum in London
The Greek government believe that the Elgin Marbles should be returned to Greece to be put in their new museum. Why is this? Greece believe that the Elgin Marbles still belong to them as the Greek government never sold it to Elgin, but the Turks who controlled Athens at the time.
