Making polymers (C1)

Morgan Cheney Chemistry GCSE English 9 cards

Making polymers (C1)

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1HydrocarbonCompound made of carbon and hydrogen atoms only
  2. 2Examples of hydrocarbons•AlkAnes(a hydrocarbon that has single covalent bonds only)
•AlkEnes(a hydrocarbon that has double covalent bonds)
  3. 3Why is propane(C₃H₈) a hydrocarbon?Because it only has C and H atoms(It's an AlkAne because all the bonds are single covalent bonds)
  4. 4Why is PropEne(monomer)(C₃H₆) a hydrocarbonBecause it only contains C and H atoms(It's and AlkEne because it has a double covalent bond)
  5. 5What is bromine tested for ?An AlkEne:
(When orange bromine water is added the AlkEne turns colourless)
  6. 6What is addition polymerisation? The process which many AlkEne monomers react to give a polymer(reaction needs high pressure + a catalyst)
  7. 7How can you recognise a polymer from its displayed formula?By looking out for a:
    -long chain
-the pattern repeating every 2 carbon atoms
-two brackets on the end with extended bonds through them
    - an 'n' after the brackets
  8. 8Displayed formula of poly(ethene)Enter text here...Displayed formula of poly(ethene)
  9. 9Why is Propanol(C3H7OH) not a hydrocarbon?Because it contains an oxygen atom
