Amir's isolation from Baba, it's always 'adult time'. Description of Afghanistan pre-war, rich district that Amir lives in. Wall of Ailing Corn introduced, destroyed later, connotations of wall. Contrast of Amir's home to Hassan's, story of deception of their births. Hosseini's first description of different ethnic/religious groups in Afghanistan at this time. Ends with interesting image of both Hassan and Amir feeding from same breast. |

| What happens in Chapter 4 of The Kite Runner? | Baba and Amir are likened in the fact that Baba never referred to Ali as his friend and Amir never thinks about Hassan as his friend, potential irony. More childhood description of Amir and Hassan, cinema and Afghan culture compared to West. Amir reads to Hassan, takes mickey out of words he doesn't know. Another day, he tricks Hassan by making up some stories himself. Rahim Khan sends a note to Amir telling him how good his story was. Last sentence: 'suddenly Afghanistan changed forever'. |
| What happens in Chapter 5 of the The Kite Runner? | Warfare in Afghanistan is introduced, 'rat-a-tat-tat', innocent excuse given 'hunt ducks'. Context of war given on page 32. First meeting with Assef and friends, who is portrayed as some sort of Nazi sociopath. Irony shown in this first meeting, Amir thinks to himself that Hassan is a servant, not a friend but then he thinks that he treats him more like a brother, which is ironic because he is. Assef makes promise for him to punish them another time. Hassan's birthday is described, gets surgery on lip. |
