Where were early management ideas derived from? Army, Religious corporations, Slavery, East India Corporation
What is the East India Company? An English company developed to encourage trade with East India - they made profits from charging taxes. Government-like organisation involving judges and governors.
Define Business within Pre-Industrial Society These were controlled by an owner who was fully liable for any business failures. These ran as small workshops whereby trades were completed by skilled tradesmen who taught apprentices.
What happened in the Industrial Revolution It spurred on new technologies (e.g. machinery), and introduced new key industries such as metallurgy, railways, gas lighting, glassmaking etc. There was a transition from an agrarian economy to industrial, and there were big changes to the overall standard of living.
What is Limited Liability? 1856 It is the state of a business where there is less responsibility on owners and stakeholders in the case something goes wrong. Legally, the company is a person that is responsible for its own actions. This encourages investors.
Define Management Origins: Maneggiare (horse handler) The process of pursuing organisational perspectives through interpreting, planning, coordinating, communicating, and accomplishing actions.
Define 'Organisation' Systematically arranged frameworks relating to people, things, knowledge, and technology. Organisations are intended to achieve certain goals, and have people designated to defined roles and responsibilities, through integrated routines and practices.
Who is Max Weber? He is a sociologist that observed the Prussian Army, and is seen as a pioneer for bureaucratic theories. He described the ideal organisation as 'rational-legal bureaucracy'. Legal: Submission to rules and procedures Rational: Predictable and non-arbitrary Fair: Right of appeal
Who is Frederick Taylor The founder of Taylorism, or 'scientific management' who worked with Henry Ford to develop the assembly line.
What is Taylorism A method of Scientific Management - Time and motion studies - Applies the principles of engineering to management - Specialisation and routinisation of work - Assumes one best way to manage all situations
What are some characteristics of the Assembly Line? The idea was to separate the roles, find the fastest person to do the role and then make it faster. Then pay staff based on the outputs of their work, rather than the length of time they work.
