Question Answer
Responsibilities without rights ADVANTAGE/ FOR The age of majority is blurred. Some activities have a minimum age lower than 18
Youth interests ignored ADVANTAGE/ FOR the needs views and interests of 16-18 are routinely ignored or marginalised. Lowering the voting age may give greater attention to issues such as education and drugs policy
Stronger political engagement ADVANTAGE/ FOR lowering the voting age would re-engage young voters in two ways. 1. strengthen their interests and understanding 2. help re orientate politics around the issues more meaningful to younger voters
Irrational cut- off age ADVANTAGE/ FOR The notion that the current voting age is a reflection of intellectual and educational development is flawed. It ignores the rise in educational standards and the fact that there are no restrictions on ignorant poorly educated adults
Immature voters DISADVANTAGES/AGAINST Until 18 most young people are in full time education and live with their parents. This means that they are not full citizens and their educational development remains incomplete
Preserving 'childhood' DISADVANTAGE/ AGAINST a symptom of a larger trend to erode childhood by forcing adult responsibilities and choices on children and young people. Should be allowed to concentrate on school, enjoyment and personal development without having weighty decisions placed on their shoulders
Deferred Representation DISADVANTAGES/ AGAINST young people are not permanently denied political representation. It is only delayed or deferred
Undermining turnout DISADVANTAGES/ AGAINST turnout may decline if the voting age is lowered. As young voters are less likely to vote and it could create a generation of abstainers
