How is the exam set out? You will receive the paper of the unit you have studied. All questions will appear.

Question 2. Purpose - 8 marks You need to analyse the purpose of a source. Begin by explaining the message (what is it about?) with evidence, and then explain the purpose (why was it made?) with evidence and contextual knowledge. You should spend 12 minutes on this question.
Question 3. Cross-reference - 10 marks You need to compare and contrast three different sources in the paper. You should analyse how far they support each other and whether they challenge each other on a given topic. Analyse and make judgements on content and provenance. You should spend 15 minutes on this question.
Question 4. Utility/Reliability - 10 marks You need to analyse how useful or how reliable two sources are in providing evidence of a topic. You should look for both usefulness and limitations with the content and provenance of the source and come to a conclusion. You should spend 15 minutes on this question.
Question 5. Hypothesis - 16 marks You need to write an essay (remembering SPAG) based on a given statement or hypothesis. You should use all the sources and analyse them in terms of content and provenance. End with a conclusion based on how far the sources agree with the statement. You should spend 24 minutes on this question.
Other points Remember NOP when analysing provenance - Nature (what type?), Origin (who, when, where?) and Purpose (why?) The exam will only be on one topic in the unit, but you should try to include as much contextual knowledge as possible if relevant.
