Flashcards
Circulatory responses to exercise
Cards in this deck (16)
- 1Explain why we might see a fall in diastolic blood pressure during dynamic exercise.Time for heart to fill decreases as heart rate increases and therefore after a certain point we cant fill the heart fully during relaxation so diastolic pressure is slightly lower.
- 2Explain why we see an increase in the systolic pressure during dynamic exercise. We have increased venous return and therefore increased cardiac stretch and according to the Frank-Starling law this increases the stroke volume. Increasing stroke volume increases the pressure blood is ejected from the heart thus increasing systolic volume.
- 3What happens to peripheral resistance as we increase our % VO2 max workload? It decreases
- 4Training (increased/decreases/remains the same) VO2 max at max heart rate.Increases
- 5What is Chronotropic Incompetence? The inability to reach 85% of age predicted VO2max
- 6How does heart rate change in relation to static exercise intensity?Increases proportionally to intensity.
- 7Stroke volume _____ during static exercise, and this change is ______ to the exercise intensity.decreases, proportional
- 8Cardiac output _____ during static exercise.increases
- 9Draw a graph to show the relationship between systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure during a static contraction.
- 10Give two reasons for the large increase in blood pressure we see in weight lifters.intrathoracic pressure increased blood pressure, and muscles constrict blood vessels in the muscles
- 11Describe cardiac drift. Explain why it occurs. The process of increasing heart rate and decreasing stroke volume over a period of sustained steady state aerobic exercise. Heart rate increases to offset the decrease in stroke volume, decreased SV happens due to decreased venous return which is due to dehydration and thermoregulation (increased skin blood flow).
- 12What environments would you expect cardiac drift to be highest?Hot or humid environments which cause lots of sweating therefor decrease plasma volume more.
- 13When we are upright our stroke volume is ____ than if we were supine. Our venus return is highest when we are _____.lower, supine
- 14How do arm exercise compare to leg exercises in relation to increasing blood pressure and heart rate. Explain some reasons for this happening.Arm exercises cause a greater increase in heart rate and blood pressure compared to leg exercises. This is due to decreased venous return in arm exercises which are due to the following; weaker muscular pump, arterial circulation less efficient when above the heart, smaller muscle mass in arm so less vasodilation and therefore lower blood flow.
- 15Arm exercises elicit a ____ max heart rate than leg exercises. Arm exercise elicit a _____ max O2 uptake and ____ max ventilation.lower, lower, lower
- 16Draw a graph to show the blood pressure changes during dynamic exercise including lines for systolic, diastolic and mean. Use % of VO2 max as a measure of exercise intensity.
