Flowchart
Spit Formation
Flowchart content
Longshore drift moves sediment along coastline in zig-zag pattern
Once the power of the wave becomes too weak to transport the sediment, it deposits the sediment
Over time, the sediment builds up and forms a ridge of sand (a spit)
If the prevailing wind changes direction, the sediment will be deposited parallel to the direction of the wind
Once the spit curves due to a change in wind direction, it is called a cusped or hooked spit
E.g Spurn Head, Yorkshire
