Cognitive influences on Language Learning
  1. All conditions, strategies or processes learners have acces to while learning a foreign language (IEXPRO, 2020, p.5)
    1. There are 4 factors related , two of them are:
      1. INTELLIGENCE OR "G" FACTOR
        1. GARDENER 1985
          1. Claimed the existence of MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
            1. Logico-mathematic/ Linguistic/ Spatial/ Musical/ Bodily-Kinesthetic/ Interpersonal/ Intrapersonal/ Naturalistic/ Spiritual.
          2. It is present in all learners
            1. Measured by IQ tests
            2. Represents an important factor in SLA (under formal instruction)
              1. GENESEE (1976) & EKSTRAND (1977) show that:
                1. Intelligence may influence acquisition of some L2 skills
                  1. Reading, writing,, language analysis and vocabulary study.
                  2. Oral fluency and skills are less likely influenced by intelligence
                2. APTITUDE
                  1. Natural ability people have to perform different actions, such as SLA.
                    1. CAROLL & SAPON
                      1. Created the Modern Language Aptitude Test
                        1. Identified 4 main components:
                          1. Phonetic/ Phonemic coding ability
                            1. Grammatical sensitivity
                              1. Inductive language learning ability
                                1. Rote learning ability
                            2. BIALSTOK, FROHLICH (1978), KRASHEN (1981) maintained that:
                              1. Aptitude can´t be trained as they consider it unmodifiable in SLA
                              2. SKEBA (1989) believed that:
                                1. Aptitude factor has to involve adapting classes according to the learners´characteristics (learner centered).
                              3. It´s different from intelligence
                          2. The other 2 factors related are also:
                            1. COGNITIVE STYLE
                              1. It is how learners perceive, "monitor, conceptualise and recalls linguistic information" (IEXPRO, 2020, p. 11)
                                1. BROWN (1973)
                                  1. It is a combination of cognition and affect
                                    1. Identified 4 variables:
                                      1. Reflective-impulsive thinking.
                                        1. Broad-narrow categorizing
                                          1. Skeletonizing-embroidering
                                            1. Belief congruence-contradiction
                                        2. WITKIN (1962, 1971)
                                          1. Designed a test (Group Embedded Test)
                                            1. Used to identify and measure
                                              1. Field dependent people
                                                1. People who can´t difference between figures from the gorund (holistic view)
                                                2. Field independent people
                                                  1. People capable to separate figuires from the ground & essential from inessential elements. (analytic view)
                                            2. SKEHAN
                                              1. Field dependent person: Person oriented, sensitive towards other people.
                                                1. Field independent: Less sensitive, object oriented, cerebral.
