Conditionals
First Conditional
- The first conditional is used when there is an intention to say that there is a chance of something happening in the future, if another event happens.
- See how the structure is: If I study, I will get a good grade on the exam.

- IF + SIMPLE PRESENT – WILL + VERB
- The first conditional is used when there is an intention to say that there is a chance of something happening in the future, if another event happens.
Second Conditional
- IF + PAST SIMPLE – WOULD + VERB
- The second conditional is used to talk about situations that are guesswork or just unlikely to happen at the moment.
- Check out the structure: If I was rich, I would to travel a lot.
- The difference between these is that the first conditional deals with something that can happen if another action happen, that is, it is a possibility in the present. The second conditional is a simple guess. of what would happen if something had already happened.
- Here the difference is very clear, the third conditional is used when one has to assume what would have happened if another action had taken place, two events are observed in the past. The second conditional is used to make an assumption of the future if something in the past happened
- Check out the structure: If I was rich, I would to travel a lot.
- The second conditional is used to talk about situations that are guesswork or just unlikely to happen at the moment.
- IF + PAST SIMPLE – WOULD + VERB
Third Conditional
- IF + PAST PERFECT – WOULD/COULD/MIGHT HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
- The third conditional refers to the past. This case speaks of a hypothetical situation that would be the result of another determined action, also in the past. See sentence structure:
- See sentence structure: If you hadn't spent so much money, you could have bought a new cell phone.
