Techniques for Testing
Test Harness
- Used to streamline software development
- And possibly assist future maintenance
- Consists of predefined software
- With expected test results
- Helps to see if changes that have been made are successful
- Reduces the needs for manual time consuming testing
- Helps to see if changes that have been made are successful
- With expected test results
- Used to streamline software development
Performance Testing
- To test how fast some aspect of the system...
- ...performs under a particular workload
- Can help to demonstrate how well a system meets performance criteria
- To test how fast some aspect of the system...
Volume testing and scalability testing
- Uses anticipated peak volumes of data input or network traffic and is necessary to test the performance
- Replicates live conditions
- Shows how a system will cope as a database would grow, or a website gets busy
- Uses anticipated peak volumes of data input or network traffic and is necessary to test the performance
Usability testing
- Used for measuring how well people can use an ICT system or part of a system for its intended purpose.
- Shows if developers need to change the system so users are able to use the system
- Used for measuring how well people can use an ICT system or part of a system for its intended purpose.
Multi-platform/portability testing
- Some systems will be used on a range of different hardware and operating system platforms.
- While it should work on all types of hardware and software this test can highlight problems
- Some systems will be used on a range of different hardware and operating system platforms.
Prototyping
- Where prototypes have been used to define (and possibly to sign off) the system, the outputs and appearance of the completed system can be compared with the prototype system.
