Secondary Storage

  1. Magnetic storage

    • External hard drive
    • Magnetic hard drive
    • High capacity (stores a lot of data)
    • Magnetic storage has a slower read/write speed in comparison to solid state storage.
  2. It is a non-volatile storage. It is needed in a computer system to store your programs, operating system and files

    • Non-volatile means when the computer system has no power, the data is not deleted
  3. Optical drive

    • CD
    • DVD
    • Blu Ray
    • If the CD or DVD is scratched or damaged the optical drive wont read it. It isnt very durable
    • The optical drive is portable
  4. Solid state (flash) storage

    • USB memory stick
    • Solid state hard drive
    • Playstation memory card
    • Excellent read/write speed. Data is loaded and saved a lot quicker in comparison to magnetic storage
    • Not good capacity compared to magnetic storage
