ionic bonding

  1. what are isotopes?

    • same number of protons, different number of neutrons
  2. ionic bonding ?

    • an ion is an atom or group of atoms that has an electrical charge, either positive or negative
      • negative ion (anions), gain electrons
      • positive ions (cations), loose electrons
      • an ionic bond is a bond between a positive metal ion and a negative non-metal ion. There is a strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
        • ionic compounds have a giant ionic lattice structure. ions form a closely packed regular lattice. there are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
  3. periodic table

    • the elements in group 1 of the periodic table are called the plussy and alkali metals
    • when any group 1 elements react with a non-metal, an ionic compound is formed in which the metal ion has a positive charge as the metal atom looses one electron
    • the elements in group 7 of the periodic table are called halogens they are all non-metal. when any group 7 element reacts with a metal, an ionic compound is formed in which the ion has a negative charge as the non-metal gains one electron
  4. ionic properties

    • high melting/boiling point
    • soluble
    • Dont conduct when solid
    • Do conduct when dissolved
