Unit 1.2 (Memory)
RAM & ROM
- Two items that are stored in Random Access Memory (RAM) is data currently in use and commonly used instructions or programs
- RAM is volatile and ROM (Read Only Memory) is non-volatile
POST
- The role of the Power On Self-Test (POST) is that the BIOS chip checks components are present, and hardware, if it is fine, it will start the CPU
- BIOS is an basic input/output systems that contains programs to load the hardware
- The role of the Power On Self-Test (POST) is that the BIOS chip checks components are present, and hardware, if it is fine, it will start the CPU
Virtual Memory
- Virtual Memory is implemented is by the Virtual Memory Manager (VMM), creating a file on the hard disk and the OS moves data
- Virtual Memory is an area of secondary storage and used like RAM located in the hard drive
- Disk Thrashing is when a computer's virtual memory subsystem is in a constant state of paging
Flash Memory
- Advantages of Flash Memory is its portable, no moving parts and requires no power
- Disadvantages of Flash Memory is its expensive and can be lost easily
- Advantages of Flash Memory is its portable, no moving parts and requires no power
Cache
- Cache is a type of memory, is has a very small amount on the processor chip, but is very fast
- Increasing the cache size will reduce the number of memory to disk transfers and may speed up processing of these instructions
Solid State
- Solid state means that there no moving parts, so it doesn't make noises, however there can be noises from the connection.
- Memory Stick
