SECONDARY STORAGE

  1. MAGNETIC HARD DRIVES

    • Stores data using magnetic media such as HDD and Floppy disks.
    • They have platters and a read/write head to check the magnetic properties of the platter
    • They have a high capacity and they are extremely cheap
  2. It is not resistant as you could drop it or get it wet and it wouldn't be readable

  3. SOLID STATE DRIVES

    • It stores data directly onto silicon microchips with an electrical charge
    • It is durable so we can use it for a long amount of time. It is also a lot faster than most secondary storage
      • They are very expensive and each storage location can only be written to a certain amount of times because as higher voltage has to be used each time to flash the block screen. An example is a USB stick
  4. OPTICAL DISK DRIVES

    • Stores data by making marks in a pattern that can usually be read back with a beam of laser light
    • They are cheap in cost and it will still be readable if you drop it or get it wet
    • It has a slower access time compared to most other secondary devices
