Propositional and Predicate Logic
Logic
- a symbolic system that provides rules for reasoning and inference
- used to represent certain aspects of meaning very precisely
- symbols are used to replace ambiguity
Propositional Logic
- concerned with how he truth of complex propositions relate to the truth of its propositional parts
- propsiton is assumed to be atomic
Unary sentence operators
- expressions that can be added to a sentence to make a new sentence
- eg sentential negation, modals, certain adverbs
Binary sentence connectives
- expressions that can be put between two sentences to make a new sentence
- eg and/but/if/if and only
- expressions that can be put between two sentences to make a new sentence
connectives and operators in logic
- negation - it is not the case that = ~
- conjunction - and -
- disjunction - or - v
- conditional - if -
- biconditional - if and only if -
atomic propositions represent the meaning of sentences that don't feature any connectives/operated
- written in lower case letters - p/q/r
- letters can represent generic variables over propositions, or they can be assigned specific propositions using keys
