Atomic Structure

  1. Atoms

    • Elements
      • Made up of atoms with the same atomic number
      • May travel as two atoms called a molcule
    • Compounds
      • Made up of two or more different atoms
      • Can be seperated in many different ways
    • Electronic Structure
      • Elements need a full outer shell to become stable
      • Amount of electrons in outer shell determines reactivity
  2. Group Elements

    • Group 1
      • Very reactive with certain substances
      • React with the moisture in the air
    • Group 7
      • Most reactive elements
      • 7 electrons in outer shell
    • Group 0
      • Do not react with anything
      • Known as the noble gasses
  3. Speration techniques

    • Electrolysis
      • Seperation of substances using electricity
      • Only used for seperating elements more reactive than carbon
    • Displacement Reactions
      • A more reactive element displaces a less reactive element
      • Sodium Chloride + Magnesium = Magnesium Chloride + sodium
    • Distillation
      • Seperates salt and water to their original forms
      • (you can seperrate them with evapouration but this way you keep the salt)
  4. The Periodic Table

    • History
    • Modern
