1. Atoms

   • atoms are made of protons, neutrons and electrons
     • protons have a relative charge of 1+
       • neutrons do not have a charge as they are neutral
         • electrons have a relative charge of 1-
           • atoms contain an equal number of protons and electrons so carry no overall charge
       • the relative masses of a proton and neutron are both 1
   • Ions and Isotopes
     • an ion is an atom with a charge
     • atoms with a different amount of neutrons to protons is called an isotope
