1. Atom

   • Molecules are groups of two or more atoms bonded together
   • The smallest particle of an element that can exist by itself

2. Element

   • Made up of only one type of atom
   • Found in the Periodic Table
   • Hydrogen
   • Oxygen
   • Nitrogen
   • Carbon

3. Compounds

   • Two or more elements chemically combined
   • The elements in a compound are joined together by bonds
   • Can only be separated by a chemical reaction
   • Properties are different to the properties of the elements it contains
   • Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen
   • Sodium chloride (salt) is a compound of sodium and chloride

4. Mixtures

   • Two or more elements or compounds mixed together but not chemically combined
   • Each substance in a mixture keeps its own properties
   • Easy to separate
   • Seawater is a mixture of water and salts
