What makes a good web design?

  1. Font and size

    • Must be legible
    • Fits in with the theme of the website
    • Make the size big enough for everyone to read
    • Don't make the size massive or it will take up too much space
    • Add interest and capture attention
  2. Organisation

    • Split up the information into separate parts
    • Label things clearly so that people can easily find what they're looking for
    • Don't have massive chunks of information or people will get bored and skim over it
    • Colour code or add illustrations to make it easy for anyone to find what they want
    • Don't squash things together as people will get confused and it looks less appealing
    • Try to put everything simply and clearly, don't ramble
    • Navigation bars are a must have tool for any website.
  3. Colour and Theme

    • Try to have a colour theme so you know which colours to use. This will also add interest and make it look appealing to all readers
    • Avoid vibrant colours in blocks as they are too bright and will divert the reader's attention
    • Don't overdo it! Too many colours can look unattractive or confuse the reader
    • Having a theme will help with organisation and knowing which options to choose in the general design
    • Try to use calming colours to focus the reader's attention. Use their properties to get the reader in the midset you want them to be in
    • Use the right images to help get across your information. This will give the reader a break from overloading information
    • Only use appropriate pictures but make sure they are interesting and collaborate well with your information
  4. Loading

    • Websites which take years to load are very unpopular
    • Try to minimise media content in size
    • Minimise HTML and other coding behind the website
    • Images which are smaller reduce the time taken for the website to load
  5. Friendliness

    • Your website needs to be child-friendly
    • Assume that all different people are going to read it
    • Font, size, colour and organisation all fit into this category
    • Take into account all different types of needs and disabilities people may have when creating your web page
    • Pretend that you are the reader. How easy is it for you to read it?
    • Don't add anything inappropriate or anything that might be seen as offensive
