Geological History
Bombardment (in regard to Earth’s Formation)
- The continuous attack of something
Geological Time Scale
- The geologic time scale is a system of chronological dating that relates geological strata to time.
Layers of the Earth
- The structure of the Earth is divided into layers. These layers are both physically and chemically different. The Earth has an outer solid layer called the crust, a highly viscous layer called the mantle, a liquid layer that is the outer part of the core, called the outer core, and a solid center called the inner core.
Stratigraphy
- the branch of geology concerned with the order and relative position of strata and their relationship to the geological time scale.
Fossil Record
- A fossil record is a group of fossils which has been analyzed and arranged chronologically and in taxonomic order. Fossils are created when organisms die, are incased in dirt and rock, and are slowly replaced by minerals over time
Relative Dating
- Relative dating is the science of determining therelative order of past events, without necessarily determining their absolute age
Absolute Dating
- Absolute dating is the process of determining an age on a specified chronology in archaeology and geology. Some scientists prefer the terms chronometric or calendar dating, as use of the word "absolute" implies an unwarranted certainty of accuracy.
