Data Transmission Protocols

  1. A protocol is a set of rules that defines a method for transmitting data between different devices over a network.

    • Email
      • SMTP
        • transmit data from your email client to your outgoing mail server
        • transmit the data between email servers : so that it can move from your outgoing mail server to the recipient’s mail server.
      • POP3
        • used to download emails from your mail server to your email client.
        • drawback that you won’t be able to access your emails on multiple devices
        • Post Office Protocol 3 as its the 3rd version
      • IMAP
        • same as POP3 but the difference is instead of downloading your emails, they are synced between your client and your server.
        • The Internet Message Access Protocol is an alternative to POP3 for retrieving emails from your mail server.
        • Able to access the same emails on multiple devices, and any change made on one device will be updated on all other devices.
    • Voice& Video Calls over the internet
      • SIP
        • The Session Initiation Protocol is a signalling protocol that establishes the connection between sender & receiver.
      • RTP
        • The Real-Time Transport Protocol works alongside SIP to transmit data packets along the connection
      • RTCP
        • The RTCPs primary function is to send control packets that provide feedback on the quality of the data delivery.
    • Web Pages
      • We use it daily to access information in our personal and work lives.
        • HTTP
          • establishes a connection between the client and server and then transfers web pages to the client so they can be rendered by the browser
          • Lacks security
          • also allows the transfer of additional related files, such as images embedded within the page.
        • HTTPS
          • is a version of HTTP that transmits data in a secure encrypted format using either TLS or SSL technologies.
        • FTP
          • is the protocol used when transferring files between computers over the internet
    • Secure Payment Systems
      • HTTPS allows for the transmission of data securely over the internet. This is used for transmitting bank details to the retailer securely so they can process the transaction.
        • SET
          • is a communications protocol that was initially supported by MasterCard & VISA for secure payments
        • 3D Secure
          • is the popular method for secure online payments used by VISA, MasterCard, American Express and most others. It is an XML protocol that uses SSL encryption to ensure data is secure.
      • E-commerce is reliant on the ability to pay for goods online securely.
        • Secure Payment Systems rely on HTTPS for transmitting bank details from the user’s computer to the only retailer in a secure manner. SET and 3D Secure are both specific secure payment protocols used to perform an online transaction securely.
