Programming Languages
IDEs (Integrated Development Environment)
- TREE
- Translators
- Translators are compilers and interpreters that convert our high level languages (python, java, C++, etc) into low level languages (binary)
- Compiler
- Translates all of the source code at once and creates one executable file
- Only needed once to create the executable file
- Returns a list of errors rather than stopping when it finds one.
- The program runs quickly after a long compiling process
- Interpreter
- Translates code one line at a a time
- Needed every time you want to run the program
- Returns the first error it finds then stops
- Runs at a slower pace as it translates the code line by line.
- Assembler
- Translates assembly language into machine code.
- Each CPU requires a unique assembler.
- Editor
- Editors allow you to write your code and colour codes your code to make it easier to understand and bug fix. They also allow you to edit your code.
- Run time environment
- Run time environment allows you to run and test your code while finding logic errors in your code
- Error diagnostics
- Helps you with debugging by telling you where to find your syntax errors and what they are.
- Translators
- TREE
High level languages
- Code that is designed to be understood by people so is easier to read, write and modify.
- C, C++, C#, Python, Java, Javascript, Ruby
Low level languages
- Tricky for humans to read and write but are easier for a computer to run.
- Assembly language
- Mnemonics that are created to be understood by different CPUs in different personalised ways
- Machine code
- Code that is designed to be read and unserstood by CPUs and CPUs only
