secondary storage

  1. mom volitile storage which stores data permanantly.it is needed in a computor system to store your programs, operating systems and files

    • non volitile storage means that the data is not deleted when the computor system has no power connected to it
  2. solid state storage

    • disadvantage
      • less cost effective in comparison to magnetic it is also more engery efficent
    • advantage
      • more durable and can read and write data much faster than magnetic storage
  3. optical storage

    • examples
      • any storage method in which data is written and read with a laser .cds dvds and blu ray are examples of this
    • advantage
      • cost effective and very portible compaired to magnetic because it has moving parts
    • disadvantage
      • not very durable and has a limited capacity compaired to magnetic
  4. magnetic storage

    • disadvantege
      • not as durable due to moving parts and read and writes data slower in comparison to solid state
    • advantage
      • cost effective compaired to solid state
    • examples
      • data is stored by magnitising the surface of flat circular plates called platters these plates rotate at a very high speed
      • uses microchips to store data instead of magnitised discs and does not contain any moving parts
