Secondary Storage

  1. Devices that store data permanently unless you delete it. Secondary storage is non-volatile.

  2. Optical storage

    • Disadvantages
      • An optical devices has a slower read and write speed than solid state dive, which means that programs will load slower.
      • Its also less durable compared to both magnetic and solid state devices as it can scratch really esily so the computer wont be able to read it.
      • Has a limited capacity compared to magnetic and solids, which means theres less space for data to be stored.
    • Advantages
      • Optical devices are more portable than solid states and magnetic devices. Therefore the device can be used on other devices.
    • examples
      • CD
      • DVD
      • Blu-Ray
  3. Solid State

    • Advantages
      • It has no moving parts so therefore its more durable and reliable.
      • The read/write speed is quicker than both magnetic and optical therefore the device will be quicker in accessing data.
    • Less cost effective because it doesn't have as much capacity as the other types of secondary storage but still the price is higher.
    • examples
      • phone
      • tablet
      • laptop/desktop
  4. Magnetic Storage

    • Disadvantages
      • It isnt as durable as soldid state as it has moving parts so therefore it wont last as long.
      • Also its read/write speed is slowe aswell which means data will ttake longer to be accessed and decoded.
    • advantages
      • Its cost effective as its capacity is really large and the cost is very reasonable therefore it will be more acessable for more people.
